This is according to the Hon. Minister for Agriculture, Matthew Walter, who was addressing the House of Parliament on Friday 25th July, during the 2014/2015 budget debate.
The Minister said that based on the Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s budget report, it is obvious that Government has been taking agriculture to the next level.
He quoted the 2014/205 National Budget Address, “The horticulture programme introduced by Government has been very successful and has been largely responsible for the growth in the agriculture sector in the past five years. The non-banana crop sector is estimated to have grown by 6.4 percent and 13.0 percent in 2011 and 2012 respectively.”
According to the Hon. Minister, his Ministry has also done work in reinstating faith in and lending support to old, new and prospective farmers.
“We held the first Agri-Forest Festival in Dominica and the objective of the festival was to restore confidence in the farmers and educate them on what needs to be done to make farming an enjoyable and profitable profession. [It was also to stimulate the youth to encourage them to actively participate in agriculture and replace the aging farmers.]
The Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated $9.9M in the 2014/2015 National Budget.
